NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 sets out Clear, Purge, and Destroy as the federal sanitization categories for media containing sensitive data, and defers to IEEE 2883 for technique detail. Because phones and tablets store data on solid-state flash memory, our mobile device sanitization uses verified factory-reset and cryptographic-erase methods aligned to the Purge category, followed by physical destruction on request, with verification documentation for every device processed.
Under the HIPAA Security Rule, a covered entity must implement policies for the final disposition of electronic PHI and for removing it from media before re-use.
