Three sanitization paths, one verification standard
NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 sets out Clear, Purge, and Destroy as the federal sanitization categories, and defers to IEEE 2883 for technique detail. We match the method to the drive and the risk profile, and document every device either way.
Physical Shredding
Mechanical destruction, platter by platter
Degaussing
Magnetic field erasure for HDDs
Verified Data Wipe
Resale-track sanitization
Certified Physical Shredding
Drives are mechanically shredded to a particle size that renders platters and controller boards unreadable and unusable. Shredding is the default path for drives with no remaining resale value, and the one most auditors expect to see named on a destruction certificate.
Under the HIPAA Security Rule, a covered entity must implement policies for the final disposition of electronic PHI and for removing it from media before re-use. STS destruction services can support those media-disposal and media-reuse procedures: documented final disposition, serial-level destruction records, chain-of-custody from pickup through shredding, and BAA coverage where required. Every engagement also includes compliance reporting aligned to SOX Section 404, FERPA, FACTA, and the GLBA Safeguards Rule frameworks.
Particle-Size Verification
Shred output checked against the destruction standard before disposition
Serial-Level Logging
Each drive logged by serial number before it moves toward the shredder
Witnessed Option
On-site, witnessed destruction available for security-sensitive engagements
Material Recovery
Shredded material is recycled downstream after destruction is complete
Degaussing for Magnetic Media
Degaussing exposes a hard disk drive to a strong magnetic field, scrambling the magnetic domains that store data. It is fast and effective for traditional spinning-platter drives, and it is typically paired with physical destruction when a drive also needs to be rendered mechanically inoperable.
Degaussing has a hard limitation worth knowing before you choose it: it does not work on flash-based media. Solid-state drives, SSDs, and hybrid drives with flash cache store data in a way that is not erased by a magnetic field, so those devices require a different sanitization path.
HDD-Appropriate
Effective on traditional magnetic hard disk drives
Fast Throughput
High-volume batches processed efficiently
Often Paired With Shredding
Combined for drives needing both data and physical destruction
Not for Flash Media
SSDs and flash-based storage require a separate sanitization method
Verified Data Wipe for Resale-Track Equipment
When a drive still has resale or redeployment value, a software-based sanitization pass can remove the data while preserving the hardware. A verified overwrite, with read-back confirmation on every device, lets equipment move into remarketing or reuse channels instead of the shredder.
According to the IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report 2025, the global average cost of a data breach was $4.44 million. Choosing the right sanitization path for each drive, rather than defaulting every device to destruction, protects against that exposure while recovering value where the equipment supports it through our computer liquidation and IT asset disposition (ITAD) services.
Read-Back Verification
Overwrite confirmed on every device before it is cleared for resale
Value Preserved
Hardware stays intact and eligible for remarketing
Works on SSD and HDD
Software-based sanitization applies across drive types
Same Reporting Standard
Serial-level records issued whether a drive is wiped or destroyed
Built for volume, documented at the serial level
The Global E-waste Monitor 2024 reports 62 million metric tons of e-waste generated worldwide in 2022, with only 22.3% documented as formally collected and recycled. Retired hard drives are the highest-risk part of that stream: the drive, not the laptop around it, is what actually holds the data.

Enterprise-Scale Capacity
STS operates R2v3 certified processing facilities in Jacksonville, Texas and Houston, Texas. Our 250,000 sq ft Jacksonville facility processes high-volume hard drive destruction projects, including multi-site asset retirement and office closures, with capacity for thousands of drives in a single engagement.
-
Comprehensive Compliance
Secure, transparent, sustainable processing, data destruction aligned to NIST SP 800-88, disposal designed to support HIPAA media-disposal procedures, and audit-ready documentation with every engagement.
-
Documentation That Matches Your Records
IT asset managers typically expect serial-number-specific certificates of destruction that match their internal asset tracking systems, with chain-of-custody records covering the full path from pickup to final destruction.
-
Recovered Where It Makes Sense
In the most recent full reporting period, STS processed 245,988 hard drives among 1,366,386 total IT assets, routing 52.9% of units to reuse where equipment and client policy allowed it.
Hard drives rarely retire alone
We process the full range of IT and office equipment that comes off a refresh or decommission alongside the drives themselves.

Request Compliance DocumentationWhat IT and compliance teams ask first
Everything you need to know about hard drive destruction methods, documentation, and logistics.
What hard drive destruction methods do you offer?
Physical shredding, degaussing for magnetic media, and verified data wipe with read-back confirmation for drives moving into resale or reuse channels. All methods include a Certificate of Destruction for audit compliance.
Can you handle multi-site pickups?
Yes. We coordinate pickups across multiple business locations nationwide with consolidated reporting and consistent documentation across your entire footprint.
What certifications and compliance standards do you maintain?
STS maintains secure, transparent, sustainable processing standards, data destruction aligned to NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2, and processes built to meet HIPAA, FERPA, FACTA, SOX, and GLBA requirements. STS operates R2v3 certified processing facilities in Jacksonville, Texas and Houston, Texas.
How is chain of custody maintained during transport?
Every drive is logged by serial number before it moves, transported under secured custody, and tracked through to final processing with complete chain-of-custody documentation from pickup to destruction.
Do you offer value recovery instead of destruction?
Yes. When a drive has resale value and your data policy allows it, verified data wipe preserves the hardware for our IT asset liquidation and ITAD services instead of routing it to the shredder.
What documentation is provided for compliance audits?
STS provides serial-number-specific certificates of destruction, chain-of-custody reports, and asset inventory manifests formatted for internal and third-party compliance review.

Where Your Equipment Is Processed
STS Electronic Recycling, Inc. is headquartered in Jacksonville, Texas, and has served schools, businesses, healthcare systems, and government agencies across all 50 states since 2010.
Equipment collected nationwide is staged locally and transported to one of our two R2v3 certified processing facilities in Jacksonville, Texas and Houston, Texas, where all data destruction and material recovery takes place.
The Certificate of Destruction, issued on completion, lists each device by serial number with the sanitization method recorded against it.
